Black plans on creating a large-scale public mural on the

if enough funds are raised and the Historic Board of Review
of Madison approves the project.

The mural will be an eye-catching tourist
attraction, said Shipleys owner Cris Sauer, who
came up with the idea when he saw similar projects in other
towns. We dont have anything in Madison like what
Black is planning.
Black, who earned a studio art degree at Hanover College in
2008, has been painting murals for the past six years. Last
summer, she completed an internship with Louisville muralist
David Schuster.
I love creating murals, and I am excited and eager to
start the one for Shipleys, she said.
She plans to use a steamboat and historic river scene because
they play a prominent role in Madison history.
If Sauers application is approved by the Historic Board,
Black plans to begin the painting when the funds needed are
acquired. The project is estimated at $10,000, which includes
paint, scaffolding, primer, sealer, brushes and other equipment.
The mural will be three stories high and 80 feet long.
We still have a long way to go on raising the funds,
said Black, originally from Danville, Ind. We are still
looking for sponsors for the project, and we will list all
of our sponsors on the mural.

Black was suggested for the project by Hanover
College Professor Robyne Hart, who works in the colleges
Center for Business Preparation. Black was a student in the
program.
Blacks work is truly amazing, said Sauer.
She is a really talented artist, and we believe she
is perfect for the project.
Black estimates the mural could take up to three months to
finish, depending on weather conditions. In addition to that
project, she is looking at other internships and artist in
residency programs. She has also thought about teaching and
hopes to be able to travel with her work.
Anyone interested in sponsoring
the mural or donating to the project should contact Tiffany
Black at (317) 796-8793 or email: tiffmblack@gmail.com.
