Report
(August 19, 2007) Chad Hayden
figured two times might be a charm after having earned Reserve
Grand Champion, or second place overall, at last years
Madison Chautauqua pro division cooking competition. He
was right. The Taylorsville, Ky., resident returned to this
years event and captured the top trophy earning
Grand Champion on Aug. 18 for his team, Moonswiners.

He did it by capturing first place in pork
ribs and second in chicken to edge out second-place team,
Dr. Porkenstein. Last years winner, Quau, earned third
place this year.
Sanctioned and operated by the Kansas City Barbeque Society,
the competition this year featured a record 63 teams and
by winning earned Hayden an automatic trip to the societys
national competition this fall in Kansas City, the American
Royale. He also garnered bragging rights to the Madison
Ribberfest crowd.
We love Madison; it was our first ever competition
so we have come back ever since, said Hayden, 37.
This was our fourth trip here.
Hayden and his partner, Jason Hayden, earned their second
Grand Champion trophy of the year after winning an earlier
contest. It will be their first trip to Kansas City to compete
in the American Royale.
We are excited; this is a lot of fun and its
great to actually win one, he said.
KCBS teams set up Thursday and Friday and cooked throughout
the evening Friday and into Saturday morning. Turn-ins began
at 11 a.m. and judges spent the day tasting and examining
the entries in side the Brown Gym. The results were announced
at the awards ceremony late that afternoon.
The Haydens never heard of barbecue competitions until 1997
when they were visiting Memphis, Tenn. They decided it looked
like a fun activity, so they entered their first competition
the Madison Ribberfest in 2004. Now they are
hooked. They plan to enter the competition in Owensboro,
Ky., in September. Then its off to Kansas City in
October.
We threw away a lot of food when we first started
out, but we practiced a lot and we finally figured this
thing out, Hayden said.
