(October 2005) – Unlimited hydroplane fans have been racing to area stores to snatch up their DVD copies of the recently released movie “Madison.” In fact, Wal-Mart Superstore of Madison sold all 996 copies in one week since receiving the initial shipment on Sept. 13. The Wal-Mart Superstore of Carrollton had one copy left on Sept. 22 but sold it that night and has yet to receive any more, officials there said.
The DVDs sell for $19.64 at both Wal-Marts. Officials at the Madison Wal-Mart say they are expecting a second shipment of 600 copies “any day now.” In Carrollton, the shipments have been much smaller, usually well under 100 at a time.
Blockbuster Video, located on Clifty Drive in Madison, meanwhile, sold all but five of its 25 sale copies in the first week. It has 56 copies for rent at $4.23 per two-night rental. When called on Sept. 22, 35 of the 56 copies were rented. Officials there said more copies would be ordered if necessary.
Movie Gallery, on Harry Nickols Drive in Madison did not have any copies for sale but is renting the movie for $3.99 for a seven-night rental. Officials there said they eventually plan to sell used DVD copies.
At Sam Goody record store in the Riverpointe Shopping Center on Clifty Drive, 20 of the initial 70 copies were sold the first week at $24.99 per copy. The store had 50 copies left as of Sept. 24.
House O Hits, at 207 E. Main St., Madison, had only “four or five” copies left on Sept. 22 and is selling them for $22.99. Across the street at Joeyg’s Restaurant and Nightclub, one copy was left for sale for $25, with proceeds going to the Hospice at King’s Daughters’ Hospital, said bartender Mike Green. He expects to get more copies in soon to sell for the charity.
Dennis Crank, who recently opened Downtown Video at 109 E. Main St., Madison, had sold 60 of his 90 original order of DVDs. He sells them for $19.99 and plans to order 25 more soon.
Linda Lytle, executive director of the Madison Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, said she had hoped to sell the DVDs at the Visitor Center’s gift shop at 601 W. First St. but so far has been unable to obtain any copies. “The distributor we talked to said they were sold out,” she said. The CVB still plans to stock the DVD for sale when they become available, she said.
The 99-minute DVD is available for $18.72 plus shipping from Amazon.com.
