(June 1999) – It started out as a dream – a way to connect disparate communities that make up Oldham County.

Oldham County Interurban
Greenway committee members hope
to purchase the L&N train depot
just east of downtown in hopes of
turning it into a trail head and a
possible tourism information center.

It started out as a way to make use of otherwise unusable train right-of-ways.
Finally, with not much left but a glimmer of hope and a last-ditch appeal for state grant money, the Oldham County Interurban Greenway struck gold.
Well, maybe not real gold, but a lot of silver in the form of $320,000 from state coffers to help build the first leg of pathways – a 6/10th mile stretch coming out of La Grange – and perhaps enough to buy the old L&N train depot just east of downtown to serve as a trail head.
The money will be matched with another $80,000 pledged from local government.
The committee’s goal is to eventually build a paved bicycle and walking path from La Grange to Pewee Valley along Hwy. 146, the natural lifeline that follows the old train line.

“This is a great start,” Clinton said. Especially since the first attempt to secure state money failed.
The path is designed to be 10-foot wide and 13.1 miles long, costing nearly $5 million to build.
“It could take years,” Clinton said, “if it is ever built at all.”
Obstacles, such as I-71 and some unwilling property owners, may stand in the way. But committee members say they will try.
“I hope it happens. All you have to do is look at the positive impact these trails have had on other communities,” said Brian Fogle, who heads the county’s economic development office.
