at Vevay’s Swiss Wine Festival

VEVAY, Ind. (August 2007) – Residents of Vevay, Ind., are gearing up for their 36th annual Swiss Wine Festival, set for Aug. 23-26 along the town’s riverfront at the Paul W. Ogle Riverfront Park.

The Swiss Wine Festival is an annual celebration of the Vevay and Switzerland County’s cultural heritage. The festival offers a wide variety of activities and entertainment for all ages. Some of the activities include wine tasting, a Grand Parade, riverboat cruises, three stages of entertainment, fireworks show, amusement rides, a beer garden and much more.
New this year will be two early bird sightseeing cruises aboard The Spirit of Cincinnati riverboat. The paddle wheeler will cruise at 3:30 p.m. Friday, and noon Saturday, along with its regular evening cruise schedule. Tickets for the early bird cruises are $7 adults and $4 for children.
Due to popular demand, the two-hour buffet dinner cruises will be available three nights – Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hour-long sightseeing cruises are also available all three days. A moonlight cruise is scheduled for Friday night, and a fireworks cruise is scheduled for Saturday night. The boat has indoor and outdoor seating areas, including air conditioning.

The Swiss Wine Festival attracts hundreds of locals and visitors alike. Other events scheduled that week include:
n Edelweiss Teen Princess Pageant, Aug. 23. This event will kick off the festival on Thursday. The pageant is open to residents of Switzerland County ages 14-16 as of Aug. 1. The event is limited to 15 entrants. Local businesses are encouraged to sponsors a contestant for $35. The entry deadline is Aug. 1. Call Katie Collier at (812) 427-2751.
n Little Miss Swiss Pageant, Aug. 23. This inaugural event will be held at 7:15 p.m. for girls ages 4-6 as of Aug. 1. The pageant is limited to 12 entrants. The entry deadline is Aug. 20. Call (812) 534-9721.
n The third annual Cornhole Tournament, Aug. 24-26. Qualifying rounds are held Friday and Saturday for Sunday’s finals round. There is room for 64 teams with an entry fee of $20 per team and for any age players. First place prize is $300; second place wins $150; third place wins $50. Call (812) 427-3480 to enter.
n 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, Aug. 25-26. The 11th annual competition starts at 12:30 Saturday and consists of several divisions of male and female divisions and by age groups. Entry fee is $68 per team, with each person receiving a T-shirt. Proceeds benefit the Switzerland County High School basketball programs. n 5K River Run & Walk, Aug. 25. The 16th annual event presents awards to the top two finishers in seven age categories in both male and female divisions, along with overall winners in each divisions. Participants receive a T-shirt. The race begins at the Ohio River and goes through the town on hard surface. Entry fee is $16 for runners and $14 for walkers. Call 1-800-435-5688 to enter.
