CARROLLTON, Ky. (February 2008) – Vicky and Krasi Georgiev began making wine on their Carrollton farm eight years ago. This year, they decided the time was right to open a wine tasting room.

Owners Krasi and Vicky Georgiev
opened their downtown Carrollton, Ky.,
tasting room, The Mehana, on Jan. 12.

The Georgievs opened the tasting room Jan. 12 at 126 Sixth St. in downtown Carrollton. Known as “The Mehana” (the European word for tasting room), the building’s interior has an Old World traditional feel.
Choosing a downtown location for the tasting room rather than at their winery, Vicky Georgiev said the couple wanted “to present wine to people properly.”
The Mehana also offers soups, sandwiches, cheeses and salami platters. She has a few gift baskets available and plans to have more in the future made of Kentucky grown products.
The Georgievs rent the building from Jim and Doug Fothergill and provide entertainment on Saturday nights. The Mehana is always filled with music due to a surround-sound system and artwork from local artists is on display.
“The community has been fantastic; so encouraging,” said Vicky Georgiev. “This gave us the courage to take another step. All wines are made on the farm and from 100 percent Kentucky grown grapes.”
Her husband, Krasi, is originally from Bulgaria. When he first laid eyes on her parent’s farm, he asked, “Where are the vineyards? This is the perfect spot for vineyards,” said Georgiev.
They grow their own grapes and buy from other Kentucky producers to make eight different types of wine. “We want to focus on good quality wine,” said Georgiev.
There is such a history of grape growing and wine making in this area all along the Ohio River, she said. “We are fortunate to be on the Indiana Wine Trail.”
The couple rarely advertises but does attend many local festivals, events and wine competitions. They have won four international awards from the Indianapolis Wine Competition.
“We’re happy just to be in the same category as the other competitors,” said Georgiev.

• The Georgievs will be having a special Valentine Weekend Dinner with wine tasting, dinner and music by local musician Clayton Dermon. For more information, visit www.rivervalleywine.com or call Vicky Georgiev at (502) 732-8466 or (502) 732-5500.
