County officials recently applied for a $100,000 Recreational
Trail Grant to construct 3.3 miles of trails within the park. Project
supporters hope to connect existing trails within the park with Greenways
for Oldham County trails.
In addition to Greenways, the County, Oldham Ahead, local businesses
such as Oldham County Stone-Rogers Group and Scott-Klausing & Co.,
and potentially Baptist Hospital Northeast, are supporting this project.
In a letter sent out asking for letters of support for this project,
Greenways Vice President Doug Wampler said, Of the 3.3 miles,
approximately .8 mile will be ADA accessible. The trails will include
upgrading the present trail loop in and around the Oldham County Senior
Center, connecting trails in and around park amenities (Community Center,
aquatic center, tennis courts, etc.), and walking trails along Reformatory
Lake to a 10-foot wide multi-use loop in the southern section of the
This loop will include a one-mile measured trail, a one half mile measured
trail and a one quarter mile trail and include the ADA accessible sections.
Greenways is contributing financially and lending their expertise to
this project, said Greenways President Ashli Collins. Greenways helped
design and fund the expense of an engineer for the project.
Collins said she sees this project as fitting into the
overall goal of Greenways by being a destination point from the Commerce
Parkway Trail. It will be a safe place to exercise and people
can enjoy the beautiful natural scenery along the way. In time, we hope
it will connect to the YMCA.
Last year, Greenways for Oldham County was awarded a $284,000 Kentuckiana
Regional Planning and Development Agency grant for the Commerce Parkway
segment of 3.2 miles of trails. Oldham County Planning and Zoning submitted
the grant request.
A spring groundbreaking is expected for this first section of the Commerce
Currently, the Wendell Moore Park project is on hold. If the money is
awarded, We hope to get underway as soon as we can, said
Collins. If the funding does not come through, supporters will look
elsewhere for other funding sources.
The next general membership meeting for Greenways for Oldham County
is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, April 14, at the Oldham County YMCA
