LA GRANGE, Ky. (January 2012) – Audiences will be treated to a trip back in time at the second annual celebration for “The King of Rock and Roll’s” birthday. La Grange is honoring Elvis Presley’s memory in a big way by holding a sock hop and throwing a party, complete with a visit from “The King” himself.

“Last year’s party was a success,” said Linda Goin, executive director of Discover Downtown La Grange, the city’s Main Street Program that is organizing these events. As a result, “not much is different for this year’s party because everyone who attended last year’s event had so much fun.”
Even though snow put a damper on last year’s event, “the party on Friday night was fun. There was lots of dancing and some folks dressed the part in poodle skirts and ‘50s garb. About 50 people attended. We’re shooting for 200 this year,” said Goin.
This year’s Elvis Lives! Birthday Bash will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday, Jan. 6, at Soiree in La Grange. The reception hall is located at 1228 Market St. in the shopping center behind Applebee’s restaurant, just off Hwy. 53. Big R’s BBQ will cater a buffet, and a cash bar will be available as well as music, dancing and door prizes.
“I took a trip to Memphis to see my daughter and picked up a lot of goodies on Beale Street for door prizes,” Goin said.

The highlight of the evening will be local Elvis tribute artist Brian King, who will entertain the audience with his energetic performance of a timeless icon whose appeal has spanned decades and generations.
This is one of the busiest times of the year for King, who performed at last year’s Elvis Lives! Birthday Bash. For him the show is, “more about having fun with it.” He likes to show the lighter side of Elvis, a side not always seen.
King said he loves to interact with the audience as much as possible. He will share his interpretation of the man who would have turned 77 on Jan. 8, 2012.
On Saturday, Jan. 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Discover Downtown La Grange will play host to a Sock Hop ‘Til You Drop Dance Marathon. This classic event will be held at the La Grange Community Center, 307 W. Jefferson St.
The event will be emceed by local award-winning deejay Jeff Wilson and offers dancers a chance to win cash prizes. Local businesses are stepping up to donate those prizes, said Goin.
“We hope to have at least $300 for the winning couple and cash prizes for the second and third-place winners as well.”
These events are intended as fundraisers for Discover Downtown La Grange. Seating for the Elvis Lives! Birthday Bash is limited to 200. Participation in the Sock Hop ‘Til You Drop Dance Marathon is limited to 100 couples.
