LA GRANGE, Ky. (February 2012) The popular
KET program, Antiques Road Show, has gained many fans during
the time it has aired. Whether its the idea of finding a hidden
antique worth thousands of dollars or just the thought that someone
else might treasure your well-loved memento from the past that has always
held sentimental value for you, these types of programs appeal to a
wide variety of individuals.
Appraisal fairs are popular because people love finding hidden
treasures and knowing the value and history of an item they may have,
thinks Nancy Theiss, executive director of the Oldham County History
Center in La Grange.

The History Center and the Oldham County Public Library
will be co-sponsoring an Appraisal Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday,
Feb. 4, at the library, located at 308 Yeager Ave. All proceeds will
benefit the History Center.
We partner with the library on several things, said Theiss.
The library has a large space that can be used for this fundraiser and
they support our mission of preserving our local history.
The multi-purpose room that will be used is nearly 2000 square
feet and affords much more space for attendees and on-lookers. Facilities
and vending areas are also available at the library. The History Center
is a museum without the area for an event such as this, said Susan
Eubank, Library Director for the Oldham County Public Library.
The Appraisal Fair sounded like a fun program for our community,
said Eubank. The library has been interested in having an Appraisal
Fair and so when the opportunity arose to partner with the Historical
Society, we jumped at it. The Historical Society and the library have
a long history of co-presenting various programs.
Cost for the Appraisal Fair is $5 an item, limit two items per person.
There will be no written appraisals and no antique firearms are allowed
for appraisal.
Conducting the appraisals will be Mike Brown and Jack Sparks, both of
whom have traveled across the country participating in various trade
fairs and antique shows. Appraisal Fairs are always successful
and people also learn history by listening to the appraisers evaluate
an item, said Theiss.
Brown has held Appraisal Fairs for the History Center in the past. Items
brought in vary greatly, said Theiss, from dolls, framed
prints and tapestrys, toys, glassware, advertisements, clothing,
household items, books, photographs, old letters and small pieces of
furniture.
Eubank said, Everyone hopes that some family item or item they
purchased at an estate sale or yard sale could be worth more. Some people
just want to know the history behind a family heirlooms origin.
Eubank said the Oldham County Public Library is pleased to be
able to help another community agency with their space issues. We also
hope that people attending the Appraisal Fair will enjoy seeing the
new LEED Certified green library and see what public libraries
have to offer today.
The library will co-sponsor another event with the Oldham County History
Center and other county agencies on Saturday, March 31, when the April
Fool's Weird Music Contest is presented at the Oldham County Arts Center
in Crestwood.
