Carrollton Chamber hopes weather cooperates for fourth ‘RaceFest’
Event to celebrate NASCAR
at nearby Kentucky Speedway
CARROLLTON, Ky. (June 2014) – Downtown Carrollton businesses and merchants are gearing up for the fourth annual Race Fest. The goal of this unique event is to get race fans of all ages excited about the June NASCAR races at the nearby Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.
This year’s event will just enhance the previous events, said Mark Smith, who sits on the Race Fest planning committee. The Race Fest committee works within the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce to plan this annual event.
Last year’s event was rained out, but Smith is hoping for much better weather this year. “We called it off last year for safety issues before people congregated downtown,” he said. “But we did have a band that played through it.”
Part of the recovery process from the rainout was in “getting the information out that this will still be an annual event,” he said.
Race Fest 2014 will be held in downtown Carrollton from 5-11 p.m. Wednesday, June 25. Activities included in the event are live music, karaoke, classic car cruise-in by the Kentucky Kruizers, motorcycle show, corn hole, inflatables, food, vendors and giveaways from area merchants.
The event is actually spread out over three days, June 25-27. June 25 is the downtown celebration, said Smith, while the June 26-27 “will incorporate Kroger and Wal-Mart activities.”
All Race Fest events will be “spread throughout the downtown area. People really talk about the variety of things to do.”
Something Smith said the committee wants to build on this year is the second annual Soap Box Derby competition. Local businesses and organizations are encouraged to build a non-motorized vehicle, which will be raced down Fourth Street for bragging rights and prizes.
A free shuttle bus will be available to bring visitors from the Kentucky Speedway Campgrounds to downtown Carrollton from 6-10 p.m. Additional stops at local hotels have been added to better accommodate visitors.
“We want to capture more folks traveling in from out of state,” Smith said. “The chamber has gotten several inquiries about the event,” which tells Smith word is circulating about Race Fest, which takes place only 15 minutes from the Kentucky Speedway.
“It’s gone really well each year, continuing to grow in terms of population and the number of attendees,” Smith said. The crowd has grown from mostly locals to a good number of out-of-towners. “It’s been good for tourism.”
Race Fest is sponsored through contributions from the City of Carrollton, Carroll County Fiscal Court, Carroll County Tourism, Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and sponsorships from local businesses. In the past, the Carrollton Wal-Mart has provided grant money each year as well.
