Local groups find fun way
to promote selves via cookoff

Madison Chamber’s fall event
continues to grow in popularity

(October 2014) – There are many people who would love to get their hands on the award-winning chili recipe from last year’s Soup, Stew, Chili, and Brew, including the winners themselves. RiverRoots Music and Folk Arts Festival team members were proud to accept the First Place award for their chili but are not sure which entry won.

“We have two booths at the event,” says Jim Bartlett, the RiverRoots team organizer for the cookoff. “Each booth has two entries. So we know we won, but we don’t know whose chili was the best.”
Out of the 12 awards presented by the Madison Area Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event, the RiverRoots group claimed four. In addition to the first place prize, they won third place in the soup category and claimed the second and third place distinctions for their entries in the brew category.
According to committee member Wanda Heath, the brew entries were a hot and cold version of the same recipe for Pumpkin Spiced Cider. The hot version was topped with whipped cream and drizzled with caramel sauce. Bartlett says that members of the River Roots committee always meet prior to the competition. Individuals will then present recipes for consideration. A group discussion occurs in order to determine which recipes will be entered. “We try to change it up every year,” adds Bartlett.
Soup, Stew, Chili, and Brew is the only Madison festival to take place on Main Street, and is special in that it allows participants to fundraise for their own organizations. The 12th annual event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.

Participating in a community event that endorses tourism as well as small town camaraderie is an added bonus. The festival appeals to many area groups and organizations because it allows them an opportunity to promote their own events.
Visitors to the Soup, Stew, Chili, and Brew will be happy to see that the food festival has grown. Katie Wood, the chamber’s Events and Marketing Manager, says that the event, previously held between Jefferson and West Street will now be located between Mulberry and Broadway. This new footprint adds a block to the overall size of the function. There will also be a beer garden this year as well as wine tastings to be offered by the Thomas Family Winery and Madison Vineyards. The Kid Zone has expanded as well as simplified. There will now be a flat fee of $10 for unlimited access to numerous inflatables, games and face painting.
The event charges no entry admission. Taste tickets sold on site. The event is sponsored by many local and regional businesses and corporations and is organized with the help of many volunteers. Live music will be happening throughout the day on the Main Stage as well as a stage that is sponsored by the Red Bicycle Hall at 125 E. Main St.
