Celebration of Women

Oldham County Chamber to feature four speakers at popular event

Operation PARENT founder Schumm to be honored

LA GRANGE, Ky. (May 2016) – The anticipation is finally over. Jean Schumm will be the 2016 recipient of the Woman of Distinction Award from Oldham County Chamber & Economic Development.
Schumm, originally from Pittsburgh, has been a guiding force in the community for years. One of the major accomplishments of her life is the organization of Operation: PARENT.
She began Operation: PARENT in 2005 at South Oldham High School. The goal of the organization is to create on-going opportunities for parents to network with one another and learn about teen culture in the process. Schumm also had the distinction of being chosen as the 2011 Grand Marshal of the Oldham County Day Parade.

Last year’s Celebration of Women event attracted a large crowd to CityPlace in downtown La Grange, Ky.

For many years, the chamber has recognized the need to celebrate the women of Oldham County, like Schumm, and their accomplishments. Several nominations are always received, said Camille Coltrain, Programs and Events Manager for the chamber. A person is chosen to receive this award because she is “a dedicated community member, who goes above and beyond to make Oldham County the wonderful place we all love.”
Oldham Chamber & Economic Development has played host to the annual Celebration of Women luncheon for a number of years. The date was moved this year from the fall to the spring.
The event began because “our office recognized a need to celebrate the women of Oldham County and offer the opportunity for local businesses to show their appreciation for the hardworking, brilliant women of our community,” said Coltrain.
When choosing who should receive the award, a committee looks at certain criteria including: their contributions to Oldham County through service, their contributions to the overall preservation of Oldham County and their commitment to their home or business community, she said.
The Celebration of Women event is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at CityPlace in Pavilion 1, located at 112 S. First Ave. in La Grange. Tickets are $25 per person.
Last year’s Woman of Distinction Award winner, Hope Gardiner, said she had attended the Celebration of Women event several times. At the 2014 event, she said she was “blown away b the caliper of women in attendance as well as the panel of speakers.”
Gardiner called it “a great networking opportunity and time to spend with women who are making a difference in our community. The speakers were women I could relate with and felt excited and energized when I left.”
The event always includes a panel of women, and this year’s panel is quite exciting, said Coltrain. “Our panel this year includes women from innovative industries you might not know are thriving in Kentucky. Everything from professional soccer, to aerospace and biodynamic farming, this panel is sure to spark great conversation and inspiration.”
The 2016 panel is composed of Amanda Duffy, president of Louisville City FC soccer team; Ellie Puckett, Space Tango; Maggie Keith, Foxhollow Farms; and Kathy Mills, owner of Strategic Communications. The chamber’s Outreach Manager Mae Marks will be moderating the panel.
Duffy has been with the Louisville City FC since October 2014. She has more than 10 years of experience working in the industry, which includes both men’s and women’s division of the United Soccer League.
Puckett is the director of business operations for Space Tango, overseeing the day to day operations of this innovative aerospace company. She has also worked for Kentucky Science and Technology Corporations and Kentucky Innovation Network.
Maggie Keith is a fourth generation steward of Oldham County’s Foxhollow Farm. She serves as a board member for Dare to Care Food Bank and Slow Food Bluegrass.
Kathy Mills has 32 years of experience operating successful technical sales organizations. In 2014, Strategic Communications was awarded the Louisville Business First Fast 50.
Men do attend the event as well, said Coltrain. The event is sponsored by PNC Bank.
