Former teacher turned photographer Brock enters photo show

Her photography has taken her many places

LA GRANGE, Ky. (August 2016) – Patricia Brock began her experimentation of photography at a young age with her mother’s box camera. She has since developed a contemporary style and continues to pursue her passion for the lens.
“I’ve been interested in photography all of my life,” said Brock, 68. In 1998 she retired from teaching at Miner Lane Elementary to “pursue my passion.”

She embarked upon a new career and established her own business, Captures of Nature. Her goal in photographing images is to capture the play of light, shadows and colors.
Her favorite subject matter has always been nature. “I started with nature and florals.” She snaps a lot of floral close-ups, but has also begun photographing sculptural pieces.
Brock will be among several artists who have entered the “Anything-Everything” photography show at Gallery 104 in La Grange, Ky. “Anyone can enter,” said show chairperson Ann Stroth. So far, 18 pieces have been submitted and artists had until Aug. 1 to enter.
“We have had this show consistently for the last four years,” Stroth said of “Anything-Everything.” “There is no special theme.” Artists can and have submitted photography depicting sunsets, birds and “a mother and her kids in Africa.”
Brock’s love of photography has taken her to foreign places as well as her own backyard. During her travels, Brock became interested in architecture and has added this architectural sculptural composition to her work. She studies the lines, shapes and angles to provide a fascinating view of the world as she sees it.

This altered photo by Patricia Brock depicts the new Pedway Bridge from Louisville, Ky., to Jeffersonville, Ind.

She is inspired by “whatever catches my eye. It has to be something that just draws me in.” This Louisville native describes her own work as “detailed, contemporary and full of bright colors.”
Her images are printed in large format on metallic paper, brushed aluminum, canvas, acrylic panels, glass and photographic papers. Each image offers an intimate and close-up view of nature through florals, waterfalls and animals, in addition to architectural elements, appearing to draw individuals into each photograph.
All works in the show will be displayed in the back room of Gallery 104 from Aug. 9 through Sept. 16 and are for sale. An opening reception is planned for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the gallery.
Awards will be given out for First Place ($300), Second Place ($200), Third Place ($100) and Student Division ($25). Artists were allowed to submit up to three pieces of photography. The show is sponsored by the Arts Association of Oldham County, which runs Gallery 104.
Brock has two pieces entered into “Anything-Everything.” “Water Pattern” is a print of patterns of water in the Ohio River. It is printed on brushed aluminum.
The second piece is titled “Pedway.”  “It is an image of the Big Four Pedway Bridge on printed acrylic,” she said. The work is “color enhanced.” She recently developed a series of work titled “Color Explosion,” which creates vivid excitement of her printed images.
She co-owns and exhibits at Gallery Janjobe, located inside Mellwood Arts Center in Louisville. The gallery features a diverse collection of artwork by its six owners and additional artists from Kentucky and around the country.
Bill Luster will serve as the show judge for “Anything-Everything.” He is best known locally as a photographer for the Louisville Courier-Journal. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1976 for Feature Photography along with 11 other members of the Courier-Journal and Louisville Times photography staff for coverage of court-ordered busing.
