Eat Mor Butt BBQ takes top trophy at Madison KCBS barbecue contest

Ferdinand, Ind., team was second at last year’s event

(September 2016) – Keith Helming was surprised when his team, Eat Mor Butt, was declared the Grand Champion winner at the 2016 Madison RibberFest pro barbecue cooking contest on Saturday, Aug. 20 in Madison, Ind. All of the blood, sweat and tears he had poured into his barbecuing technique paid off in a big way.

His partner in pork is Chris Roos. “We knew we had turned in four good categories, but we never knew how good we were,” said Helming of Ferdinand, Ind.
Helming, 40, and Roos, 50, were “family in a way, related through in-laws,” he said. Helming said they began barbecuing 15 to 20 years ago.
Cooking seemed to be in Helming’s beings, since his parents owned a restaurant while he was growing up. When he and Roos decided to enter a hometown contest one year, “we went out on a limb,” he said. From this experience, “we got the bug in us.”
The friends began competing in barbecuing contests in 2010. They now travel all over the country to contests, having been to Georgia, Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee and Kentucky.
Competing in 10 to 15 contests a year keeps them busy. “Last year, we did 17,” said Helming, an electrician. Roos works in sales.
They still have five more competitions to go this year. They have to take a “lot of vacation time off of work,” he said. Competing in an event means getting everything ready before they go, packing it up, unpacking at the site, cooking, cleaning and packing up again to take it home, then putting it all away once they get home.
Their next competition will be on Sept. 16-17 at Blues & BBQ at the Point in Carrollton, Ky. “All it is, is a hobby,” Helming said. “We enjoy doing it.”
Last year at the Madison RibberFest, Eat Mor Butt was the Reserve Grand Champion (second place) team. Helming said that “last year though Sam’s Club we qualified for the Nationals.”
They traveled to Bentonville, Ark., where they placed seventh in pork and in the top 20 out of 50 on Oct. 10.
The Sam’s Club National BBQ Tour boasted a $500,000 prize purse. Kansas City Barbeque Society-certified judges had to select 50 of the best out of an entry pool of 750.
“This tour shows the true American barbecue style of cooking that stretches all over the country – from coast to coast, border to border,” said Series Director Michael McDearman last year. McDearman demonstrated grilling tips and techniques for attendees.
This tour is a tournament-style series in which teams advance from a local qualifying event to the top tier of their regional event in order to qualify for the National Championship. Sponsors include Bush’s, Cargill, Clorox, ConAgra Foods, Heinz, the National Pork Board, New Zealand Lamb, Pepsi Co., Reser’s Fine Foods, Sweet Baby Rays and Tone’s.
But no matter how you slice it, said Madison Ribberfest KCBS chairman Drew Garrett, “We have the premier barbecue festival in the world. We have a great landscape and promote a friendly competition.”
Garrett’s father, the late Jeff Garrett, founded the Madison Ribberfest in 2002.
Ribberfest is “a lot bigger festival” than some, said Helming. “They do it right down there, with adding blues and a beer garden. The crew is great, also.”
There is a lot of interest from the crowd at Ribberfest, too, he said. Attendees ask questions because “a lot of people don’t make brisket at home.”
Ribberfest organizers “bring in the big name teams,” Helming said.
Other 2016 Ribberfest contest winners
In addition to pro and amateur cooking contests, the Madison Ribberfest Kidz Q offers youngsters to compete. This year’s winner in two separate age categories were as follows: 8-11-year-old division: Riley Poling, first; Nathaniel Baugh, second. In the 12-15-year-old division: Reagan McIntire, first; Abby Schneider, second.

In the concrete pig decorating contest known as “Pigmania,” there are two winners each year – one determined by the judges and a “People’s Choice” award for popularity that is based on the amount of money donated to each pig. This year’s Judge’s Choice went to the “Chris P. Bacon” pig created by Madison Auto Collision. The “People’s Choice” award went to the Chewbacon” entry created by Mane Attractions salon.
More than $3,500 was raised this year by Pigmania, according to organizers. The money is used to provide scholarships to area high school graduates.
