As we enter a new year, we at the RoundAbout Entertainment Guide want to take this opportunity to discuss the progress we have made in producing and distributing our free, monthly arts and entertainment guide to the region.
Despite the fact that 2017 will be our 19th year of publication, there are still many readers and advertisers who don’t realize the scope of our operation or just how significant the impact our publication has on readers throughout Kentuckiana. So here goes:
The first edition of RoundAbout hit the streets in April 1999. A total of 12,000 copies were initially printed, with two separate front covers produced and switched out during the print run – one for Indiana and another for Kentucky. Each cover promoted a different story inside the paper, however, the paper was the same throughout. In this way, we were able to highlight a significant “cover story” for each side of the Ohio River and still provide complete coverage to all readers.

As our advertising sales increased over the years, our page count grew, giving readers even more stories each month.
So now you hopefully have a better understanding that when we say, “Reach the Region, Reach for the RoundAbout,” we truly mean it!
Our regional Calendar of Events provided a valuable resource for readers to find out what is going on across all our distribution area – which from the beginning included 12 counties. These include the Indiana counties of Jefferson, Switzerland, Ohio, Ripley, Jennings and Scott; and the Kentucky counties of Trimble, Oldham, Carroll, Henry, Gallatin and easternmost Jefferson (Prospect and three exits along the Gene Snyder Freeway).
From 2006 to 2010, we experimented by producing two separate publications – one for Indiana and another for Oldham County, Ky. The Kentucky edition was mailed to every home and business for five years in Oldham County and Prospect. But when advertising did not support the cost for that effort in Kentucky, we decided in 2011 to go back to producing ONE large publication each month. Today, we print 25,000 copies per month, and the ads and stories you see are going to all of our readers.
When producing a free publication, distribution is among the most important aspects for achieving success. So early on we identified high trafficked locations for placement of our own racks, most of which we restock weekly throughout the month!
Today, we have 108 racks in key locations throughout these counties, plus we have excellent distribution at 15 area U.S. post offices, several banks, courthouses and fitness gyms, two casinos (Belterra and Rising Star), two state parks (Clifty Falls and Gen. Butler), several public libraries and busy restaurants (which include seven McDonald’s, five Hometown Pizzas, three Taco Bells, four Dairy Queens and three Gustavo’s Mexican Grills).
In addition, we hired a distribution company in Louisville to place and restock our newspaper in six Louisville area Kroger stores. These Krogers include those in La Grange, Prospect, Holiday Manor Shopping Center off the Watterson Expressway-Brownsboro Road, plus three more locations along the Gene Snyder at Brownsboro Road exit, Westport Road exit and Lagrange Road exit. We also distribute at the Kroger stores in Madison, Ind., and Carrollton, Ky.
Three other busy racks are located in easternmost Louisville at Liquor Barn, Schlotzky’s Deli and the new Total Wine & More.
You can see all our rack and box locations on Page 2 each month.
In addition to this distribution, we mail more than 250 papers to advertising clients, potential clients and paid subscribers. Yes, we offer subscriptions for only $30 per year!
Finally, our popular Internet website – accessed either by www.RoundAbout.bz or www.RoundAboutMadison.com – features all of our staff-written stories, columns and monthly Calendar of Events. And all of those stories posted online over the past 18 years are searchable by keyword, which is a tremendous community resource!
The RoundAbout offers our advertisers – large and small – an affordable way to reach customers throughout the region. And because we restock our racks weekly, they are able to gain exposure for their ads for the entire month long. Readers love the fact they can read about people and events in all the areas around them. The Calendar of Events alone offers readers a way to plan their activities and read up on upcoming festivals and shows.
