The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra is coming to Madison. In celebration of Madison’s Bicentennial, the orchestra will perform a free concert of music ranging from Hollywood film compositions to Broadway musicals on the south lawn of Madison, Ind.’s Lanier State Historic Site at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 7.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for local residents and people who don’t get to experience this type of quality performance,” said Gerry Reilly, Lanier Mansion site manager. “This is a great event for the entire family because the music selections are so diverse.” He said the lighter music will make for a relaxing event for audiences of all ages and musical preferences.
The program will showcase vocal selections by local singer Lauren Ringel, including “Defying Gravity” from the musical “Wicked,” and “Send in the Clown” from “A Little Night Music.”
The Pop’s principal trumpeter, Robert Sullivan, will play selections such as “Someone to Watch Over Me,’ “Flight of the Bumblebee,” and “Ode to Doc Severinsen,” by the Cincinnati Pops’ associate conductor Steven Reineke.
“Star War Suite,” by one of America’s favorite film composers, John Williams, is also one of the scheduled pieces.
The orchestra will show it’s prowess with Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and “Variations on a Shaker Melody.” The performance of “Stars and Stripes Forever,” by John Philip Sousa is always a crowd pleaser.
The program is sponsored by Grote Industries Inc. and presented in part by the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.
No alcohol is permitted on the Lanier grounds; however, picnic items and lawn chairs are welcome. From 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., guests can partake of a complimentary ice cream treat from Frosty Treats ice cream truck.
In case of rain, the concert will be held in the Madison Consolidated High School auditorium.
