Construction of pedestrian tunnel
on schedule at track

Workers must finish project by
May 1 according to contract

Staff Report

(March 2012) – Construction is under way at the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky., where track officials are installing additional parking lot and a 42-foot-wide pedestrian tunnel under Hwy. 35. Winter temperatures have been more than kind to crews working on the $10 million project. Speedway Motorsports Inc. purchased 160 acres of land to build the additional parking in response to the logjam that occurred at last year’s inaugural NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

KY. Hwy. 35 at the Sparta exit of I-71 in Gallatin County has been closed while construction of a pedestrian tunnel is under way at the Kentucky Speedway. The tunnel will connect the track to a new parking lot that is expected to double the parking capacity to nearly 35,000 vehicles. The work is scheduled to be complete in time for this year’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race on June 30.

The new addition is expected to double the parking capacity to nearly 35,000 vehicles. The tunnel is designed to safely move 8,000-10,000 people from the east side of Hwy. 35 into the facility.
In addition, the state is widening the southbound I-71 ramp from the interstate to the Speedway exit, and Hwy, 35 is being widened. The Speedway will also build another pedestrian ramp near the track to keep the flow of people moving. A state contractor must finish the work by May 1 to avoid stiff financial penalties.
This year’s Sprint Cup race, the Quaker State 400,” is scheduled for Saturday, June 30. Following is the entire 2012 race schedule:
• June 28: NASCAR Camping World Truck Series’ “UNOH 225”
